PSYCHO (1960) dir. Alfred Hitchcock
Oh look at me mummy I'm wearing a dress! Am I a pretty girl mummy? Look at me while I dance for you Mummy!? MUMMY?!?!?!...*stab stab stab.
It's not often that a life in the service industry, in this case the motel trade, drives a man to such extremes. But Norman Bates is a loony. He is also a bit of a perve and most definitely a Psycho.
This film was made back when everyone loved being a sexist…more so. It was a way of life and Mr Hitchcock was no different. Ladies were not allowed to do bad things, and if they did do bad things they could be sure punishment would soon be dished out.
The female lead steals some money - big deal! in a modern flick this would be encouraged...what are your thoughts on it Mr Hitchcock? DIE WHORE!...oh, so just hack her to...oh right...in the shower...ah, ok, what about?...never mind.
Imagine Alfred Hitchcock today, picture the poor guy trying to process the modern woman....Christ almighty! He'd be the one running the motel! They'd be piling up.
Hitchcock's films are littered with all this kind of stuff, so if you love films about Mum's, voyeurism, Catholic guilt and mistaken identity - Hitchcock is your one-stop shop for all kinds of crazy.
Anyway when it gets going it’s not a big deal - it’s just about a guy who killed his mother (she is still mummified in his house) and her influence on poor Norman remains - and, no biggie - Norman dresses up as her and kills women that stop for the night at his road side motel business. What? it’s fine, you lot are so judgmental. It’s probably a phase.
It's black and white but don't let stop you. Be careful not to watch the 1998 remake, it's bloody awful.
